How to Get Rid of Static Cling on Furniture

Getting rid of static cling on furniture takes little time and uses common household ingredients. Static cling is caused by static electricity, which in turn is "electricity which builds up in an object and stays there for some time," explains Jennifer E. Lawson in "Hands-On Science." Static cling is most often produced on cold dry days. That is because moisture in the air disperses positive and negatively charged atoms, thus dispersing the electricity. The easiest way to get rid of static cling on furniture is to use water.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic spray bottle filled with water

Instructions

    • 1

Cover or remove objects near the piece of static cling furniture that could get damaged if sprayed with water.

    • 2

Spray the piece of furniture lightly with misted water. Hold the spray bottle several feet away, to avoid damaging the fabric.

    • 3

Smooth the dampness throughout the entire surface of the furniture. You do not want it very wet; slightly damp is ideal.

    • 4

Test the furniture. If static cling is still present, repeat one or two more misted sprays of water until static cling disperses.

    • 5

Put a humidifier in the room with the static cling furniture for a longer term effect. Static cling occurs most often during cold dry days, so running a humidifier will keep moisture in the air and diminish static cling.

Rub dryer sheets over your furniture, as an alternative method to remove static cling. Douse the dryer sheets in water for added protection against static cling.
