How to Clean White Rings on Furniture

Unsightly white rings on wood furniture seem to be impossible to remove with regular cleaning or polishing methods. They are caused by moisture soaking into the wood's finish, but not into the actual wood. According to the Good Housekeeping website there are several remedies to choose from including mayonnaise and cigarette ashes, toothpaste and baking soda or heat from an iron. Apply one of these methods as soon as the rings are noticeable to ensure complete removal.

  • Iron

Instructions

  1. Iron Method

    • 1

Place a thick towel on the white ring.

    • 2

Plug in the iron and set it on low to medium heat.

    • 3

Set the iron plate onto the towel. Don't touch the wood directly with the hot iron. Press gently to allow the heat to penetrate through the towel. Check the white ring every 20 seconds until it disappears.

    • 4

Polish the wood with a light spray of furniture polish on a soft cloth.

    Mayonnaise and Cigarette Ash Method

    • 5

Apply 1 tsp. of mayonnaise and 1 tsp. of cigarette ashes to a damp cloth.

    • 6

Wipe the white rings with the cloth until the stain disappears.

    • 7

Wipe away any excess residue with a clean part of the cloth.

    • 8

Polish the wood with a clean cloth and a light spray of furniture polish.

    Toothpaste and Baking Soda Method

    • 9

Mix 1 tsp. of toothpaste and 1 tsp. of baking soda with a spoon in a small bowl.

    • 10

Apply the toothpaste mix to a damp cloth and gently scrub the white rings.

    • 11

Remove the excess with a clean, damp cloth.

    • 12

Polish the furniture with a cloth and a light spray of furniture polish.
