Cleaning & Care of Bamboo Furniture

Bamboo has become a popular product used in the manufacturing of indoor furniture. This is because bamboo is strong and can be grown in almost any environment in a very short length of time. The average time it takes for a bamboo tree to grow large enough for commercial use is approximately five years. Bamboo can grow to be 50 feet tall and can be used in the production of doors, flooring and trim as well. Maintaining and cleaning bamboo furniture will ensure that it remains strong for several years to come.

Instructions

  1. Clean

    • 1

Vacuum up any dirt, pet hair or debris from the bamboo furniture with the vacuum's furniture brush attachment.

    • 2

Fill a plastic spray bottle three-quarters full with plain water. Add 2 tbsp. ammonia and 2 tbsp. liquid dish soap to the bottle and shake to incorporate the contents.

    • 3

Lightly spray the entire piece with the water and ammonia mixture. The water will help the bamboo fibers tighten, which will make it more durable. Avoid using harsh detergents or cleaners on the furniture, and do not overspray the piece. This could cause damage.

    • 4

Soak a soft cloth in water. Wring out the majority of the liquid from the cloth and wipe down the furniture to remove any soapy residue.

    • 5

Allow the piece to air dry before using the piece, especially if it is a chair or sofa. Perform this general cleaning once a year.

    Maintenance

    • 6

Dust the bamboo furniture at least once a week with a duster or paper towel. This will help avoid the buildup of any unwanted dust particles and help prevent any scratches in the bamboo.

    • 7

Clean up any liquids that accidentally spill on the bamboo furniture immediately. This will help reduce the likelihood of a stain forming.

    • 8

Avoid purchasing outdoor furniture manufactured from bamboo. Bamboo does not stand up well against the elements and if exposed to excessive moisture will become damaged. If you do own bamboo furniture, do not keep it outdoors during rain and place it in a shady area during dry weather.

    • 9

Restore the shine to bamboo furniture by rubbing the wood with commercial wood polish.
