How to Clean Desk Tops

Cleaning your desk top can be done quickly and promote a healthier workplace for yourself and others. A 2002 study conducted by Dr. Charles Gerba of the University of Arizona found that office desks can harbor up to 400 times more bacteria than a common public toilet seat. Many office personnel keep knickknacks, stacks of paper and photographs of their friends and family on their desks, eat meals at their keyboards, and apply lotions and makeup in their cubicle. If not cleaned regularly, dust, debris and thousands of bacteria can build up on the desk top.

Instructions

  1. Desk

    • 1

Remove paper and clutter from your desk, one section at a time. Once you have cleared one section of your desk, mix together one part vinegar with one part water in an empty spray bottle.

    • 2

Spray the desk surface with the vinegar mix, allowing it to sit on the surface for several minutes to disinfect the desk top.

    • 3

Wipe clean with a moistened sponge. Rinse the sponge and continue to wipe desk clean of dust until the sponge no longer picks up dirt.

    • 4

Throw away or recycle unnecessary papers, memos and items you no longer require for use at your desk before re-organizing the contents back into their place.

    • 5

Repeat this process until each section of your desk or cubicle is clean and organized.

    Electronics with Keyboards

    • 6

Shut down and unplug electronic devices you wish to clean.

    • 7

Unwrap electronic cleaning swabs, throwing the wrapper in a waste paper basket.

    • 8

Run the electronic cleaning swab lightly in between the keys of your office calculator, keyboard, telephone pad, and other electronic devices. You may need to use several swabs to get these items clean.

    • 9

Allow devices to dry before plugging them back in and turning them on.
