Add one or two tablespoons of dish soap to a large bowl of warm water. Mix in the dish soap until the water becomes sudsy.
Wipe the furniture with the soap and water solution, using a rag to apply. Do not soak any one part of the sofa with the solution for too long a period of time. Dry off the furniture with an old towel.
Allow the furniture to dry. This may take between 12 and 24 hours.
Use a cleaner such as Woolite or Resolve carpet cleaner on upholstered furniture. Mix 1 to 2 tablespoons of the selected cleaner into a bowl of warm water. You can also add either baking soda or ammonia to the water, but not both. The combination of baking soda and ammonia can create a chemical reaction that may make you ill.
Wipe down the upholstered furniture with the cleaning mixture using a rag. Wring out the rag so it is damp, as opposed to soaking.
Allow the furniture to dry for 24 hours.
If the furniture has any accompanying decorator cushions, clean them in the same way. Place the cushions outside to air-dry.
Remove the smell from wooden furniture with furniture polish or oil soap.
Use a damp rag to wipe the furniture down. Do not use too much water on the wood furniture, as this can cause water stains, and the rag should be soft and made of cotton or a cotton-like material.
Dry off the furniture with a dry rag.
