How to Repair a Leather-Top Table

Leather-top tables are a somewhat retro furniture choice, with very few modern furniture stores stocking them. However, they were once a popular choice for writing desks or vanity desks, and they provide a very elegant desktop design. Unfortunately, over time the leather can fade and crack, the same way leather sofas and chairs can, so it is useful to have the knowledge to repair it.

Instructions

Purchase a leather repair kit if the leather area has been ripped or torn. A leather repair kit will provide you with light sandpaper with which to clean the tear, adhesive to secure the provided pieces of scrap leather in place and a color compound to ensure the leather color matches.

    • 2

Clean the leather using a leather cleaning product if the table is simply tired and needs some refreshing. A little of the leather cleaning liquid on a soft, clean cloth is usually sufficient. Avoid using too much water on the cloth, as this could exacerbate the problem of fading leather. Apply the leather cleaning liquid to the leather in gradual, circular motions.

    • 3

Apply the leather cleaning liquid using a small-tipped paintbrush or a cotton swab to clean up any small flaws. This should allow you to get into the hard-to-reach areas.

Leave the table top to cure overnight, and dab the area with a dry towel in the morning. This will remove any little bits of reside left over and will ensure that the leather table top is completely dry.
