How to Clean a Microfibre Sofa

Microfiber is often used for sofa upholstery because of its durability and attractive appearance. This soft fabric has a feel reminiscent of suede but is much more durable. While microfiber is resistant to stains and dirt, it does eventually require cleaning to remain looking its best. Not all microfiber is water-tolerant, so always check the furniture tag before deciding on a cleaning method. Microfiber sofas marked with the cleaning code (W) or (SW) are water-safe. Those marked with an (S) should only be cleaned with solvent cleaners.

Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum the sofa with a furniture brush attachment. Vacuum the microfiber at least once weekly to prevent dirt buildup that will eventually work into the fabric and may cause staining.

    • 2

Mix dish soap with warm water. Use approximately one squirt of soap per each quart of water. Use this solution for washable microfiber.

    • 3

Dip a clean wash cloth into the soapy water. Moisten the dirty spot on the microfiber with the water. Blot the water onto the dirt; do not rub.

    • 4

Blot out the excess water from the sofa with a second clean cloth. Replace the cloth as it becomes damp and continue blotting until the upholstery is nearly dry.

    • 5

Moisten a washcloth with dry-cleaning solvent or rubbing alcohol to clean dirt stains from non-washable microfiber. Blot the solvent onto the stain and allow it to sit for three to five minutes.

    • 6

Blot the solvent from the microfiber with a clean cloth. Blot until the area is nearly dry.

    • 7

Brush the microfiber with a soft-bristled brush once the cleaning solution is completely dry. Brushing restores the nap and softness to the microfiber.
