Laminate is an ideal choice for a kitchen countertop, as it is economical, manufactured in various colors and patterns, and it does not need much maintenance. Laminate countertops are made of very thin layers of plastic, which are adhered together through high temperatures and bonded to a particleboard or other type of surface. Laminate countertops are stain and water resistant, but they are not scratch resistant. Sharp objects, such as knives or other utensils, can damage the surface, since it is composed of plastic, by causing scratches in the material. Whether the scratch is minimal or deeper into the surface, the damage is repairable.
