Cleaning Tips Mattresses

Mattresses tend to be a forgotten item when cleaning. We remove and clean sheets while the mattress itself lays untouched. Removing dust from the mattress keeps dust mites at bay, and airing out the mattress periodically keeps odors from seeping and locking into the fabric. Certain mattress cleaning tips help keep bedding smelling fresh and clean.
  1. Vacuum the Mattress

    • When flipping the mattress, take time to vacuum it, also. Vacuuming removes dust mites and leaves a fresher smelling mattress. Use the vacuum hose on the front and back of the mattress and along the sides.

    Mildewed Mattress

    • If you notice the mattress has a small amount of mildew on it, take it outside to a sunny location on a porch or patio; do not place it in a grassy area. Use a shop vac to vacuum the mildew from the mattress, and allow the mattress to dry in the sun. The sun's rays kill mildew spores. Do not allow the mattress to sit overnight outside as moisture from dew permeates the mattress.

    Remove Odors

    • Odors from cigarette smoke absorb into mattresses leaving a stale smell. Remove the mattress from the home to a sunny location, and spray with an odor refresher. You may also wipe scented dryer sheets over the mattress, which absorbs odors and leaves behind a fresh scent. Allow the mattress to remain outside to maximize airing it out.

    Baking Soda

    • Baking soda absorbs odors from surfaces such as mattresses. After removing sheets and before replacing with new ones, sprinkle baking soda over the mattress. The baking soda keeps the mattress smelling clean, allowing for a restful night's sleep.
