How to Renew Cedar Chests

Many people purchase cedar chests because of the attractive appearance and smell of this storage option and because the cedar can protect heirlooms and clothing from insect damage. After time and exposure to the elements, the smell of the cedar chest can fade. The chest's facade can also become brown from sun exposure. Renewing the appearance and smell of a cedar chest can not only make the chest more pleasant to be around, it can also restore the chest's value.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the contents of the chest.

    • 2

Lightly sand the inside and outside of the chest with 220-grit sandpaper. This will renew the outward appearance of the chest and help bring out the smell from the newly exposed layer of wood.

    • 3

Remove any dust created by the sanding with a soft cloth or feather duster.

    • 4

Soak a soft cloth with natural cedar oil extract.

    • 5

Rub the inner and outer surface of the chest with the cedar oil soaked cloth. This oil will soak into the wood without harming the finish and will give off an authentic cedar aroma.

    • 6

Allow the oil to dry before placing any items back into the chest.
