How to Remove Dried Glue From Furniture

Glue is a common adhesive that comes in various forms. If you're not careful, glue can drip, drop and splatter, landing on surfaces that you didn't intend to glue. If glue lands on your furniture, the best option is to remove the glue immediately. This is not always possible. However, hope is not lost. You can successfully remove hardened glue from furniture with a few household items.

  • Water-displacement spray (WD-40)
  • Cloths
  • Petroleum jelly
  • Waterless hand sanitizer
  • Paper towels
  • Butter knife
  • Liquid dish soap

Instructions

  1. Remove Dried Glue from Wood Furniture

    • 1

      Apply water-displacement spray directly onto the dried glue.

      Allow the spray to sit on the dried glue for 30 seconds.

      Saturate a clean cloth with cool water. Wipe the glue and water-displacing spray with the cloth.

      Continue applying the spray and wiping with the cloth until you have removed all of the glue from the wood furniture.

    Remove Dried Glue from Upholstered Furniture

      Dip a cloth in petroleum jelly. Rub the hardened glue with the cloth for several seconds. Apply waterless hand sanitizer to the cloth. Rub the hardened glue with the cloth for several more seconds.

      Fold several paper towels until the stack is about 1/8 inch thick. Dampen the towels with warm water. Place the dampened paper towels on top of the glue. Allow the paper towels to sit on the upholstered furniture for 1 hour, until the glue is softened.

      Scrape the softened glue off the upholstered furniture using the back of a butter knife.

      Pour 2 cups of cool water into a bucket. Add 1 tsp. of liquid dish soap and mix thoroughly.

      Saturate a white cloth in the mixture. Blot the area with the cloth, reapplying the mixture when needed, until you have removed the glue.
