How to Clean Lacquer Furniture

Lacquered furniture care and cleaning is best accomplished by keeping it simple. Cleaning regularly and removing dust as soon as it appears is the best method for keeping lacquer furniture clean and looking good. Using dry cleaning methods and avoiding cleaners as much as possible is also best for your furniture. When furniture is especially dirty, or is covered in fingerprints and grime, try cleaning with plain water first and then moving on to chemical cleaners only if necessary.

Instructions

  1. Everyday Cleaning

    • 1

Dust the entire piece of furniture with a clean, dry soft cotton rag. Do not add any cleaners or water--just use a plain, dry cloth.

    • 2

Wet a clean cotton rag with water and wring it out until it is only slightly damp.

    • 3

Wipe down the furniture, focusing on areas with fingerprints and grime, with the damp rag.

    • 4

Dry immediately using a clean, dry soft cotton cloth. If the piece of furniture is large, work in sections, wiping with the damp rag and then drying immediately before moving on to the next section. This should remove all dirt and leave your furniture looking clean.

    Heavy Cleaning

    • 5

Place a small amount of solvent based wood cleaner, dime-sized or less, on a clean, soft cotton rag.

    • 6

Rub the cleaner on to the furniture, working in small sections.

    • 7

Buff the cleaner away immediately with a clean, dry soft cotton rag. Do not wait or let the cleaner sit on the furniture. RJ Fine Woodworking recommends cleaning with one hand and immediately wiping the cleaner away with the other hand. Keep buffing until the furniture is completely dry.

    • 8

Repeat on all sections of the furniture until the entire piece is cleaned.

    • 9

Examine the furniture to make sure no cleaner was left behind on the surface. Wipe any remaining cleaner away immediately.
