How to Protect a Bed's Waterproof Mattress Protector

Mattress protectors offer many advantages when used properly on a mattress. Not only are mattress protectors waterproof and prevent bed wetting or beverage spills from seeping into the mattress, they also prevent sweat and skin oil from being absorbed as well. This helps prevent bacteria growth inside the mattress. Mattress protectors require some minimal maintenance to keep them working optimally and some good habits can extend the life of a waterproof mattress protector for years.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the mattress protector with sheets and blankets. Sheets are generally cheaper to replace than a mattress cover and they offer some protection against tearing, burns or severe spills. The less the mattress cover is exposed to spills and tears, the longer it will last.

Don't smoke in bed. This helps prevent a fire and also avoids ash burns from damaging your mattress pad.

    • 3

Keep pets from jumping on the bed. Dogs and cats have teeth and claws that are capable of tearing right through the mattress cover and ruining its water-resistant abilities. Pets should be trained not to jump on the bed under any circumstances.

Clean any mattress spills immediately to prevent stains. Switch out any soiled sheets or comforters and pick up the spill with an absorbent cloth. Spray the area of the spill with a 50/50 solution of warm water and white vinegar to help get rid of any potential stains. The vinegar also acts as a disinfectant.
