How to Repair a Pull in Berber Carpet

Berber carpet is generally more durable than other types of carpeting because it is thicker and has a more structured construction. However, the loops on a berber carpet can become snagged easily, especially if you have children or pets. When this happens, there are two basic methods you can employ to repair the damage. Use the pulling method if you can easily see each of the carpet's loops. Use the gluing method if the carpet is very dense and you are unable to see the loops clearly. Consult a professional if you are unable to repair the pull.

Instructions

  1. Pulling Method

    • 1

Unwind the end of a paperclip to use as a grabbing and pulling tool.

    • 2

Identify the small loop next to the pulled loop. Because the adjacent loops on a Berber carpet are connected, if you pull one another loop will be tightened.

    • 3

Slip the end of the paperclip under the smaller loop and pull it gently. Do not tug or pull hard, as you risk snapping the thread. Pull until the smaller loop is the same size as the pulled loop.

    • 4

      Remove the paperclip.

    Gluing Method

    • 5

Place a dab of non-water based glue on the end of a toothpick.

    • 6

Dab the glue onto one of the bases of the pulled carpet loop where it goes through the carpet backing.

    • 7

Bunch up that end of the loop so the loop is the same size as those around it.

    • 8

Hold the loop in place with your fingers until the glue sets, according to the manufacturer's instructions. This could take several minutes.
