Upholstery Odor Removal

An unpleasant smell coming from your favorite sofa or chair can make it impossible to sit down and relax. Removing the odor from the upholstery will depend on how deeply that odor has set into the material.
  1. Surface Odors

    • For odors on the surface of your upholstery, you can spray the material down with an odor-neutralizing spray. Sprinkling baking powder onto the smelly area, letting it sit for 30 minutes and vacuuming it up will remove non-penetrating smells, too.

    Deep Odors

    • For an odor that has penetrated your upholstery, you can use a wet vac and cool water to remove the source of the smell. You can also apply a mixture of white vinegar and water to the stain, allowing it to sit for a few hours before rinsing it with water, according to "Planet Cat."

    Considerations

    • If an odor has penetrated into the padding beneath the upholstery, you could need to replace the padding to fully remove the smell. Before using any cleaning agent, including vinegar, on your upholstery, test it to be sure it will not cause further damage by bleaching your furniture.
