How to Remove Electrostatics From a Sofa

Electrostatic energy is not dangerous, but it can be a nuisance. Also known as static electricity, it causes your clothes to stick to your body and your hair to stand on end -- and occasionally it delivers a small but painful shock. Electrostatics build up when materials like sofa upholstery and clothing rub together. This buildup is more likely when the air is dry, as it often is in winter. The best way to get rid of static electricity on a sofa is to prevent it from building up in the first place.

Instructions

    • 1

Treat your sofa's upholstery with a commercial antistatic spray, according to the manufacturer's instructions. Alternatively, rub the sofa's upholstery with fabric-softener sheets.

    • 2

Run a humidifier in the room whenever you notice electrostatic buildup, or when the air is particularly dry.

    • 3

Hang a humidity meter in the room near the sofa. According to Electrostatic Solutions, static electricity is less likely to build up when the relative humidity level is higher than 40 to 50 percent.
