How to Remove Wine Stains From Ultrasuede

Microfiber fabrics mimic the appearance of suede, but do not incorporate animal hide. Ultrasuede®, a trademarked microfiber luxury fabric, resists stains but is not stain-proof. Small liquid spills bead up on the surface, but puddling liquids penetrate Ultrasuede®, especially when stain treatments degrade with daily wear and tear. Blot wine stains immediately to prevent liquid from seeping through the fabric. Red tannins in red wines and sugars from white varieties can leave lasting stains.

Instructions

    • 1

Blot spilled wine with a dry, soft cloth. Absorb as much liquid as possible. Do not rub the stain into the fabric. Apply no pressure or even light pressure.

    • 2

Saturate a sponge with lukewarm or cold water. Do not wring. Blot the stained areas.

    • 3

Prepare a solution of 1 pint of water to a 1/2 cup of mild detergent. For very small stains, reduce the solution to 1 tbsp of detergent and 2 cups of water. You can choose commercial products such as Woolite, Tide Powder or Ivory. Apply the mixture with a sponge.

    • 4

Inspect the stain. If the wine spot or has not disappeared to your satisfaction, try vinegar. Dilute vinegar with an equal amount of warm water. For particularly stubborn stains, apply vinegar at full strength.

    • 5

Rinse the area with water. Dab the area with a wet sponge. If treating an arm cushion or back pillow, remove it from the sofa or chair to rinse.
