How to Remove White Stains From Wooden Tables

Wooden tables, with proper care, can remain beautiful and useful for generations. In many households, tables are a center of activity, which subjects them to a lot of wear and tear. Unsightly, seemingly permanent white stains created by steam or heat from a cup or other hot item need not ruin the table. Using items found commonly around the house, you can remove these stains yourself without having to refinish the table.

Instructions

  1. The Steam Iron Method

    • 1

Add water to the steam iron. Plug in the iron near the project area and set it to a medium heat level. Allow the iron to heat up for a few minutes.

    • 2

Place a clean, dry towel over the table's stain. Iron the towel with a slow, continual motion, using steam. Lift the towel frequently to check the stain.

    • 3

Remove the towel once the stain has been removed. Dry the table with a clean, dry towel. Repeat steps 1 through 3 or continue to Section 2 if the stain has not been removed.

Techniques for Household Pastes, Liquids and Gels

    • 4

Squeeze a little non-gel toothpaste onto the stained area. Rub the toothpaste into the finish with a soft cloth. Continue rubbing for a while. Wipe the area clean with a dry, clean cloth. Continue this process with another step if this one didn't remove the spot. Optionally, repeat this method by mixing baking soda 50-50 with the toothpaste first.

    • 5

Mix 1 tbsp. of salt and just enough olive oil to create a paste. Spoon this onto the stain. Rub this paste into the stain and allow to set for up to one hour. Wipe the area clean with a dry, clean towel or soft cloth. Complete the process with another step if this one didn't remove the stain.

    • 6

Apply a small amount of mayonnaise to the table stain. Rub it in. Allow to set for an hour or so. Wipe off with a clean, damp cloth, then dry with a dry towel. Alternatively, try the same technique with petroleum jelly.
