How to Fix Pillow Top Mattresses

The invention of pillow top mattresses revolutionized traditional bed mattress sales. Standard mattresses had not evolved much beyond water beds and hospital-type beds until the introduction of the softer, loftier "top" added to the mattress surface. Pillow top mattresses have a fabric cover that is often softer than standard mattress surfaces. Fix a rip in pillow top mattress fabric or fix flattened mattress portions with common supplies in about a half-hour.

Instructions

  1. Fixing Rips

    • 1

Measure the length of the rip. Add 2 inches to this measurement for the modified length. Measure the width of the rip. Add 2 inches to this measurement for the modified width.

    • 2

Measure and cut a fabric iron-on patch according to the modified length by the modified width measurements of the rip. Fabric iron-on patches are available at fabric, craft and discount stores in a variety of fabric thicknesses, types and colors. Choose a white, cotton fabric patch for better concealment beneath bedsheets.

    • 3

Set the iron on a dry, cotton setting. Align the edges of the rip on the pillow top mattress surface by gently tugging the edges together. Home Furnish emphasizes that it's important to know exactly where you'll be applying the patch because iron-on patches are hard to move once applied.

    • 4

Center the fabric patch over the rip. The Soccer Patch explains that you must make sure the adhesive side of the patch is touching the mattress surface.

    • 5

Iron the patch onto the pillow top surface. Press the iron firmly against the patch edges. Hold the iron down onto the patch for about 30 seconds. Move the iron along each edge of the patch and hold for 30 seconds to melt the adhesive and create a secure bond between the patch and the pillow top fabric surface.

    Fixing Flattened Mattress Sections

    • 6

Use a seam ripper to cut a 2-inch section of stitches of a nearby seam if the flattened section is near a seam. If the flattened area is not near a side mattress seam, use scissors to snip open a 2-inch slit in the center of the flattened area.

    • 7

Use an unsharpened pencil or wood stuffing stick (often comes free in the bag of stuffing) to stuff golf ball-sized wads of stuffing through the 2-inch slit. Stuff the flattened area until the loft matches the surrounding area of the pillow top. Using your palms, press down on the newly stuffed area with your palms to depress the stuffing so it doesn't look bunched up.

    • 8

Measure and cut a fabric iron-on patch into a 4-by-2-inch rectangle.

    • 9

Set your iron on a dry, cotton setting and allow it to preheat. Align the edges of the 2-inch slit.

    • 10

Center the iron-on fabric patch over the 2-inch slit. Iron the fabric patch onto the pillow top surface over the slit created to stuff the flattened area. Hold the iron flat against the patch for about 30 seconds. Move the iron to each edge of the patch and hold for 30 seconds.
