How to Care for a Howard Miller Clock

Howard C. Miller founded the Howard Miller Clock Company in 1926. Although it is best known for its grandfather, or tall case, clocks, the company also makes mantel and wall clocks, as well as furniture. Howard Miller clocks feature wood and glass cases and decorative brass movements. With proper care, your Howard Miller clock will be an heirloom that you can pass down to future generations.

Instructions

    • 1

Polish the clock case weekly with a good quality furniture polish or wax. Apply the polish or wax with a soft cloth and wipe the case clean with a second cloth. Howard Miller cautions against using products containing silicon. Wipe on the polish, rather than spraying it, to avoid getting wax on the glass.

    • 2

Apply a non-ammonia glass cleaner to a soft cloth and wipe the glass. Don't spray the cleaner directly onto the glass, as this could result in damage to the finish from over-spray.

    • 3

Wipe down the pendulum, weights and other brass parts with a clean, soft cloth. Avoid touching the brass with your bare skin. Don't use any cleaning solutions on these parts.

    • 4

Oil the movement every two years. Contact a clock professional about having this done for you. Howard Miller does not recommend that clock owners oil the movement themselves.

    • 5

Have the clock professionally cleaned every five to 10 years.
