How to Remove Dirt From My Sofa

Dirt particles can scratch leather and become embedded in upholstery fibers of sofas. Exposure to dirt causes sofa materials to eventually wear out and deteriorate. Dirt stains become more difficult to remove the longer they remain on sofa surfaces. Promptly remove dirt to preserve a sofa's appearance. Leather and upholstered sofas can last for many years with proper care.

Things You'll Need

  • Vacuum with soft brush attachment
  • Plastic bowl
  • 2 cups cold water
  • 1 tbsp. liquid dish soap
  • 2 non-dyed cotton cloths
  • Clean cotton towel
  • Moisturizing liquid body soap
  • Clean microfiber cloth
  • Warm water
  • Clean terry cloth towel

Instructions

  1. Upholstered Sofas

    • 1

      Remove the loosened dirt from the upholstery using a soft brush vacuum attachment. Operate the vacuum according to the manufacturer's instructions. Remove as much dirt and grime particles from the sofa as possible.

      Fill a plastic bowl with 2 cups of cold water and 1 tbsp. of liquid dish soap. Thoroughly mix the solution.

      Dampen a non-dyed cotton cloth in the soapy water. Blot the upholstery with the damp clot until the soapy solution is absorbed. Frequently rinse the cloth to prevent reapplying dirt to the sofa.

      Moisten another non-dyed cotton cloth with cold water. Blot the upholstery with the damp cloth to wash out the soap. Make sure all traces of soap are thoroughly rinsed out of the upholstery.

      Blot the upholstery with a clean cotton towel until thoroughly dry.

    Leather Sofas

      Extract the dirt from the sofa using a soft brush vacuum attachment. Operate the vacuum according to the manufacturer's directions. Remove as much dust and dirt particles from the sofa as possible.

      Apply a couple drops of moisturizing liquid body soap to a clean microfiber cloth. Dampen the cloth with warm water to create lather. Wring out all excess water from the cloth.

      Rub the cloth over the sofa in circular motions to thoroughly clean the leather. Lightly dampen the leather to prevent damages from excessive moisture. Do not rinse the leather.

      Wipe the leather sofa with a clean terry cloth towel until thoroughly dry.
