How to Clean Wax Build Up on Furniture

You may have a beautiful piece of furniture lurking under the grimy, dull coating of the old wax finish. Over time, the wax finish may yellow and soften. Dust, dirt and oils from your skin accumulate on the wax finish, making the surface tacky or clouded. Remove the grime and the old finish with some typical household solutions and restore that lovely wood luster to your furniture.

Instructions

  1. Remove Dirt and Grease

    • 1

Add ammonia, baking soda and white vinegar in an empty bucket. Add the contents slowly, as they may foam and bubble.

    • 2

Dip the cotton rag in the ammonia mixture and wring out the excess solution. Wash the furniture with the solution. Take care not to overly saturate the wood. Apply pressure to the cloth to remove stubborn grease and dirt.

    • 3

Rinse the wood with another rag dipped in clean warm water. Dry well.

    Remove the Wax Finish

    • 4

Add the turpentine and boiled linseed oil to the glass container. Cover and shake the ingredients.

    • 5

Pour a small amount of hot water into the small plastic container or pie pan.

    • 6

Pour a small amount of the turpentine and linseed solution into the pie pan, enough to cover the surface of the hot water.

    • 7

Dip a clean cotton rag into the pie pan solution. Wring out excess water. Buff the wax off of the furniture wood.

    • 8

Use the toothbrush to remove wax from small or carved areas. Avoid over-saturating the wood or the glues that connect the joints will soften.

    • 9

Dip a clean cotton rag in the hot water, and wring out excess water. Wipe the wood where you have cleaned. Dry well.
