How to Clean Chenille

Chenille refers to a type of yarn that is made up of short pieces of string twisted together around a center piece of yarn. Chenille is a soft and beautiful fabric made by weaving the short pieces of yarn through the fabric, creating a thick, plush fabric. The yarn that sticks up from the fabric is called pile. Caring for chenille will preserve the soft texture of the fabric and keep it from wearing unevenly or unraveling. When your chenille needs to be cleaned, follow proper procedure to keep your fabric in good condition.

Instructions

    • 1

Blot the fabric lightly with a clean towel as soon as you notice the stain. If the stain is wet, blot it with a dry towel; if it's dry, use a towel wet with cold water.

    • 2

Loosen dried, thicker stains such as mud or candle wax by picking as much of the debris off with your fingers. Lightly brush the remaining residue off the fabric using a soft-bristled brush like a baby's hairbrush.

    • 3

Blot gently at the fabric if the stain remains, using a mild detergent or spot cleaner and a warm, wet cloth.

    • 4

Gently press the fabric with a dry towel to remove excess water.

    • 5

Brush the fabric lightly with a baby's hairbrush to return the pile to its original place and to keep the fabric soft.

    • 6

Air-dry your fabric or, if possible, throw the fabric in the dryer. The dryer will make the fabric soft again.
