Silver Plating Specifications

When your silver's luster can no longer be revealed by polishing, silver plating is an option for restoring the finish. Proper care for silver plated items can keep the brilliance without frequent polishing.
  1. Preparation

    • Your silver should be inspected for scratches, pits, dents and other marks that can be corrected prior to plating. Cleaning the item to its base metal will reveal these imperfections.

    Plating Process

    • After the cleaning process, your silver will go through several rinses. The plating is then applied and the item is polished to return it to its original brilliance.

    Cleaning

    • You should treat your silver plated items gently. Cleaning with too much force can strip the plating, exposing the base metal. Always hand-wash your silver plated items, preferably with a phosphate-free detergent. Avoid contact with a metal sink to prevent scratching. Dry with a soft cotton towel or cloth. Following these steps will minimize tarnish buildup.

    Polishing

    • Check your silver often for tarnish, as it is easiest to remove when only a yellowish tint. Before using abrasive tarnish removers, try an unscented, aloe-free hand sanitizer or a combination of glass cleaner and vinegar. If these are not effective, use the least abrasive commercial silver cleaner available.
