How to Prevent Mold on Trex Decking

Made from a wood composite that offers resistance to insects and moisture, Trex is a popular material choice for outdoor decks. While Trex decking may resist moisture, repeated exposure over time to damp or wet conditions without proper cleaning may result in the development of mold on the surface. Routine cleaning of the deck surface can help remove the mold, while preventing further development of mold requires some supplies from a hardware or home repair store.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the Trex decking with a solution of hot soapy water and a long-handled bristle brush. Scrub the entire Trex surface and rinse well with water.

    • 2

Allow the Trex decking to dry completely or use a large cloth to remove excess moisture from the deck surface.

    • 3

Sweep the deck frequently to remove mold spores, dirt and dust that may all contribute to the development of mold if left on the deck surface.

    • 4

Clean the Trex deck on a regular basis with the cleaning solution and brush to prevent the growth of mold. Consider using a mixture of oxygen bleach powder and water when cleaning to provide a more thorough cleaning. Rinse well with water.

    • 5

Swab down the Trex decking with a mop or dry cloth to remove excess moisture after a rainstorm, snow or any time the deck may remain wet for a prolonged period of time. This will help prevent the development of mold spores.
