How to Remove an Odor From a Tempur-Pedic

Tempur-Pedic mattresses are manufactured out of tempur foam, which is a type of memory foam. This material is visco-elastic, which allows the mattress to mold to your body shape and then return to its original shape and size. Like any mattress, Tempur-Pedic mattress can retain odors; however, the method for cleaning this type of mattress to remove odors is slightly different than standard spring mattresses, due to its materials.

Things You'll Need

Remove the polyurethane smell from a new Tempur-Pedic mattress by sprinkling 2 cups of baking soda across the surface of the mattress and resting the mattress vertically against a wall. Place a fan directly in front of the mattress, and turn the fan on high. Allow the mattress to air out up to 24 hours. Vacuum the baking soda off of the mattress using a hand-held vacuum or hand-tool attachment.

Remove strong odors, such as urine, from the mattress by lightly spraying the surface of the mattress with warm water; do not drench the mattress, but rather dampen the surface. Sprinkle 2 cups of powdered borax directly on the mattress. Allow the borax to soak into the mattress for 5 hours.

Vacuum the water-borax mex off the mattress using a hand-held vacuum or a hand-tool attachment. Make sure the borax is completely removed from the mattress, as it can cause skin irritation.
