Easiest Way to Hang Cabinets

Hanging a group of cabinets can be a frustrating process unless you have taken the time to prepare and plan the mounting process. Without a plan or idea of where and how to hang the cabinets, you could end up installing uneven cabinets that may fall down or cause extensive wall damage if you start adding items the cabinets cannot hold or support.
  1. Prepare a Blueprint on the Wall

    • Before you start drill holes in the wall and attempting to hang the cabinets, create a blueprint sketch on the wall for the cabinets. To prepare, place the cabinets you want to install next to each other, side by side. Measure the cabinet's backside in terms of its height and length one at a time. Use a ruler and pencil to draw straight lines on the wall that reflects the cabinet's backside. If you are hanging several cabinets side by side, draw the next cabinet's backside measurements on the wall next to the first rectangle. Repeat this pattern until you have made a blueprint for all of the cabinets you want to hang.

    Locate the Wall Studs

    • You will need to find the wall studs in the wall before you hang the cabinets. The wall studs will support the cabinets so you can place heavier items inside. Mounting the cabinets to wall studs will also prevent the cabinets from falling down and causing severe wall damage. To find the wall studs, use a stud finder and slide it across the wall within the blueprint rectangles you have drawn. When the device indicates a wall stud is present, make a small mark with a pencil. Repeat this step with all of the cabinet blueprints you have drawn.

    Hang the Cabinets

    • Apply a thick line of wood glue around the perimeter of the backside of the cabinet you want to hang. Identify where the marks you have made are on the wall, as you place the cabinet up to the drawn rectangle on the wall. Apply pressure to the cabinet so the glue slowly dries against the wall. Take a mechanical screwdriver and long screws, and drill the screws through the back panel of the cabinet so the screws extend into the wall studs. Mount at least two screws per wall stud for each cabinet. Repeat for all the other cabinets you want to install.

    Finish the Installations

    • Once the cabinets are securely installed on the wall, you should connect the cabinet doors to the cabinet frame. The cabinet doors will frequently have two small hinges attached evenly apart on one side of the door. Hold the door up to the cabinet frame and place the hinges on the inside of the wooden cabinet frame. Mount the hinges to the cabinet wall using small screws and a screwdriver.
