How to Clean Black Lacquer Furniture

Lacquer adds a hard, glossy and nonporous finish to furniture that's stained or painted black. Lacquered furniture rarely requires any cleaning other than dusting. Though it's meant to be scratch- and stain-resistant, hard use can dull or scratch this type of finish. Handle black lacquer furniture with care, and always test a cleaning or polishing product in an inconspicuous area to ensure it won't damage the gloss.

Instructions

    • 1

Dampen a soft, lint-free cloth with water. Wipe the cloth over about 12 square inches of the lacquered surface. Quickly buff the area with a dry cloth to renew its shine. Repeat until the whole piece of furniture is clean.

    • 2

Apply a small amount of solvent-based furniture cleaner to a fresh cloth, if further cleaning is required. Wipe the cleaner on a inconspicuous area to test. If the black lacquer doesn't whiten, it's safe to use. Apply the cleaner to a small area, following it immediately with a dry cloth, rubbing until the surface is dry. Repeat until the entire piece is thoroughly clean.

    • 3

Apply a small dot of liquid furniture polish to a fresh cloth. Wipe onto a small area of the lacquered finish. Follow immediately with a dry cloth, buffing to a high shine. Repeat until the whole piece is protected.
