How to Remove White Water Stains From a Dark Wood Finish

Water stains on furniture can be devastating, particularly if the piece is cherished or new. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to fix the damage, which occurs when water penetrates the finish of wood --- such as when a wet glass is left sitting on a wood table. Sometimes the wood may not have a finish and the water will create more of a stain or it will raise the grain of the wood, causing a rough spot. By drying out the water stain --- no matter how old you think it is --- and then infusing it with a few household items, you can make furniture look as good as new.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a clean, lint-free T-shirt over the white water stain. Set the iron to the "cotton" setting and allow it to heat fully.

    • 2

Press the T-shirt for one or two seconds and lift the shirt and iron. The iron will activate the finish slightly and at the same time dry any remaining moisture from the stain location. With many furniture finishes, the heat activation changes the finish. Repeat this process if you notice the stain disappearing. If there is no effect, try one of the following remedies.

    • 3

Apply petroleum jelly to a clean cotton washcloth. Rub the jelly into the stain until it disappears, and then wipe the remaining jelly off completely.

    • 4

Dip 0000 steel wool in lemon oil. Rub the steel wool in the direction of the wood grain on matte- or dull-finish pieces. Once the stain lifts, you will need to polish and buff the entire surface to even out the finish.

Daub white toothpaste onto a washcloth and work it into the stain on wood that has a glossy finish. The toothpaste will leave a shine. If the stain is removed, you may need to polish and buff the wood to even out the finish.
