How to Paint a Pitcher

If you've come across a pitcher that has an attractive shape but any ugly exterior, painting it may give it appeal. Painting an object like a pitcher can be difficult, because of its lines, curves and small crevices. By using spray paint, you can ensure that all parts are covered with a smooth coat of paint. When you are done, you will have an attractive vessel in which to hold flowers, water or similar objects.

Wash the pitcher. Doing so will remove any dirt or similar material that would be lodged under the paint if not removed. Depending on what your pitcher is made of, you might be able to wash it in the dishwasher. Most ceramic pitchers are dishwasher-safe. Metal pitchers or those made from delicate material should be washed with a soft cloth and mild soap. Rinse the pitcher well and allow it to completely dry.

Place the pitcher on an object that will hold it without obstructing parts of the surface. You might turn the pitcher upside down and place it on top of a small can that fits inside the pitcher's mouth. Doing so will allow you to apply paint to all outside parts of the pitcher.

Apply a spray primer to the pitcher. Primer will help cover any unattractive areas on the pitcher, such as decals or dark paint. It will also help the pitcher to accept the paint more evenly. Use a primer made specifically for the material the pitcher is made from. For instance, metal should be covered with an etch primer. Hold the spray can about five inches away from the pitcher and move your hand back and forth in a sweeping motion to cover the pitcher with primer. Start at the top of the pitcher and work your way down to the bottom. Apply a second coat if you can still see decals or paint underneath the primer.

Apply spray paint in your desired color to the pitcher once the primer has dried. Apply the paint to the pitcher the same way you applied the primer. Choose paint of your desired texture. For instance, if you are looking for a large amount of shine, choose a high luster variety. Allow the paint to completely dry before using the pitcher.
