How to Clean Moleskin Furniture

Moleskin is a cotton, fustian fabric made with a dense, twilled weave, and on one side it is napped. Moleskin is traditionally used as a fabric for work clothing because of its durability. In more recent history, it has been used as furniture upholstery. Moleskin's soft nap offers the rich look of suede, but its cotton origins save a lot of the cleaning hassle. Moleskin is just about as easy to clean as any fabric upholstery. But before you use any cleaning product on its surface, test it in an inconspicuous area of the fabric first.

Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum the moleskin weekly with the furniture brush attachment on your machine. Make sure to focus on the cracks and crevices in the piece as well as the surfaces. Regular vacuuming will remove dirt before it settles deep into the fibers.

    • 2

Clean the entire furniture piece with an upholstery cleaner (used according to the manufacturer's instructions) at least twice annually. If the furniture covers are removable, launder them (by themselves) in cold water on your machine's gentle cycle, then line dry.

    • 3

Clean up spills immediately. Use a paper or white cotton towel to blot up (never rub) the stain until no more of it transfers to the towel.

    • 4

Treat any remaining stain with an upholstery spot remover, listed as safe to use on cotton. Apply the stain remover according to the manufacturer's instructions. Blot up the stain until no more liquid transfers onto the surface of the towel.

    • 5

Blot the spot with a towel moistened with water to soak up any residual spot remover.

    • 6

Allow the spot to air dry (if quite wet, use a blow dryer set on cool to speed up the process).
