How to Clean Water Stains From Coloured Leather

Leather is a very durable fabric as long as it is cared for properly. If your leather sofa or other leather item is stained with water, clean it up as quickly as possible. Water can drain the natural oils from leather, and if you fail to clean up a spill right away, water can leave a stain. If you already have stains on your leather, you can use plain water to remove them.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a bowl with water. Allow the water to get to room temperature.

    • 2

Dip a sponge in the water and wet it thoroughly. Wring out the sponge until it is as dry as possible.

    • 3

Place the sponge at one edge of the water stain and wipe over the spot and away. Continue to wipe the entire area surrounding the stain. Do not scrub the area; simply wipe the sponge over it.

    • 4

Wipe the entire area where the water stain is. If the water stain is on a leather couch cushion for instance, wet the entire cushion by wiping it with the sponge. Start at the water stain and work outward. The further away from the stain you get the less water there should be. Wetting the entire surface allows the leather to dry evenly, which removes the stain.

Apply a quality leather conditioner after the area has dried. The conditioner will restore the natural oils lost through the water and protect the surface.
