How to Clean Cloth Furniture

Vacuuming upholstered furniture regularly keeps it free of loose dirt, lint and pet hair but it helps to also steam clean cloth furniture once or twice a year. Steam cleaning furniture will not only freshen chairs and sofas, but also keep dirt and stains from setting in and ultimately prolong the life of your furniture. If you don't own a steam cleaner, you can rent one for a day or even a couple of hours.

Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum the furniture thoroughly. Remove the cushions and set them aside while you vacuum the rest of the sofa. Use upholstery attachments to remove pet hair and lint, and crevice tools to get into corners. Vacuum all sides of the cushions.

    • 2

Spray spot cleaner on stained areas. Gently rub with a damp cloth and blot with a dry cloth.

    • 3

Prepare the steam cleaner according to the manufacturer's instructions. Use as little cleaner as possible. Steam cleaning the furniture a second time may be necessary, but it's easier than removing excess suds.

    • 4

Spray a small section of the chair or sofa lightly with upholstery cleaner and then suction it out using the steam cleaner's upholstery attachment. Continue the spraying and suctioning process in small sections until the piece of furniture and all cushions have been cleaned.

    • 5

Lean cushions against a wall to allow for air circulation on all sides and allow the entire piece of furniture to dry completely before replacing the cushions. Run a fan to speed up the drying process.
