How to Protect a Sofa

New sofas have a clean and inviting appearance. Over time, however, a sofa begins to show wear and can fade in color. Taking action to protect the sofa as soon as it is delivered to your home or office ensures it will remain "like new" for as long as possible. Protecting the sofa also decreases the amount of stains and damage from pets or small children.

Instructions

    • 1

Move your sofa to a location that does not receive a large amount of direct sunlight. If moving your sofa isn't an option, keep windows and glass doors covered with curtains or blinds during the day. Sunlight has a bleaching effect on the color of your sofa.

    • 2

Spray your couch with a chemical upholstery protectant safe for use around humans and pets. Chemical protectants keep stains from setting into the sofa's fibers.

    • 3

Cover the sofa with a slipcover. A cloth slipcover protects your sofa from dirt and pet hair while a plastic slipcover protects your sofa from liquid spills and toddler accidents. Sofa covers come in solid colors or various attractive patterns.

Wrap your sofa in blankets if you have to move it. This protects the upholstery from rips and dirt during transit. Secure the blankets with twine.
