White spots on an oak table are caused by exposure to heat, water or alcohol. Removing them depends on the type and severity of the stain. Most white spots affect only the surface, according to Utah State University Extension, and can be removed with a mild abrasive product. Darker stains may have penetrated the wood itself, requiring completely refinishing the wood. When treating stains on oak furniture, always work in the direction of the grain and avoid over-wetting the wood.
