How to Remove Fish Glue From Furniture

Fish glue, so named because it is made from fish collagen, is a commonly used bonding agent for woodworking and cabinet making. The non-toxic adhesive is durable and can hold for years. One of the main reasons for its common use by craftsmen is the ease with which pieces can be unglued for replacement or repair. Fish glue is soluble in water, which means that exposure to moisture weakens the bonds of the adhesive. Not only does this make mistakes quicker to correct, removing fish glue from unwanted surfaces is a snap.

Instructions

    • 1

Moisten a cloth with hot water and place it over the unwanted fish glue.

    • 2

Cover the cloth with a piece of plastic wrap to keep it from drying out. Secure the materials to the furniture with string, if necessary, to hold them in position. Keep the affected area completely covered for at least four hours.

    • 3

Remove the plastic wrap, cloth and, if necessary, string. Dip a toothbrush in warm water and gently scrub the loosened fish glue. Wipe up any adhesive that comes away from the furniture with a damp cloth.

    • 4

Repeat as needed until the fish glue is gone.

    • 5

Soak a cloth with distilled white vinegar, then rub the furniture with small, circular motions to remove any fish-glue residue.
