Run the nozzle of a vacuum carefully over the surface of older furnishings to begin the cleaning process. Regardless of furniture type, this will safely remove loose surface dirt and debris. For wood and leather furnishings, remove additional dust from cracks and crevices by gently wiping with a soft cloth.
Wash painted wood with a solution made from 1 tsp. mild dishwashing soap and 1 qt. of warm water. Sponge the solution gently over the surface and scrub lightly to remove any dirt or sticky residue. Rinse with clear water and pat dry with a soft towel.
Apply a generous coating of commercial wood cleaner to any finished wooden furniture -- particularly if it appears dingy or dull. Allow the cleaner to remain on the wood for two to three hours and then wipe away with a soft cloth. Repeat as needed to remove the layers of wax, dust and dirt that may have accumulated over the years.
Pour 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar into a large bowl. Add 1 cup of linseed oil and stir until the two ingredients are well-blended. Apply the solution to leather furnishings to remove dirt and help restore luster to the material.
Dip the end of a soft cloth into the linseed oil and then rub the damp fabric against the leather using small, circular motions. Gradually move from the top to the bottom, until the entire piece has been thoroughly coated. Wait 24 hours and then buff the leather gently with a soft cloth to remove any excess oil.
Combine 2 tbsp. distilled white vinegar and 2 cups of warm water in a large bowl. Apply this solution to old upholstery or fabrics to remove stains, discolorations or ground in dirt.
Dip a sponge into the solution and then gently press it against the upholstery. Blot the fabric immediately with a dry paper towel to remove any excess moisture. Repeat as needed, moving from top to bottom, until the entire piece has been cleaned.
