How to Care for Limestone Counters

Limestone counters add a touch of interest to the kitchen, as they are available in an array of colors and often have visible fossils embedded in them. Limestone is fairly soft, which means precautions should be taken to avoid scratching the counter's surface. Limestone is also very porous, so it must be treated with a special sealer designed to prevent staining. It is wise to use coasters and clean spills quickly, even on treated limestone counter tops.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe all spills up immediately to prevent unsightly stains.

    • 2

Place trivets under hot cookware to protect the counter's surface. Use coasters under glasses to prevent rings from forming.

    • 3

Use cutting boards when chopping or slicing to protect the counter from nicks and scratches. Use potholders or trivets under cookware and other items with rough or textured bottoms.

    • 4

Clean the counters with a soft, non-abrasive cloth and special stone cleaner formulated to remove soil while preserving the protective seal. Remove dust as necessary by wiping the counter with a dry, non-abrasive cloth.

    • 5

Remove stubborn stains with oxygen bleach, which will lift the discoloration without damaging the limestone.

    • 6

Retreat with stone sealer as necessary. Contact the company you purchased the counters from for recommendations on the best type of sealer and how often it should be applied.
