How to Remove a Spot on a Sofa

Grease Stains

  Apply a small amount of dry-cleaning solvent to a clean, white cloth.

  Dab the dry-cleaning solvent on the sofa stain. Work from the outside of the stain toward the center so you don't spread it. Do not rub the stain, as this might push it further into the sofa.

  Add 3 drops of liquid dish soap to 1 cup of lukewarm water.

  Blot the stain with the soapy water until you've removed the entire stain.

  Dry the area with another clean cloth.

Ink Stains

  Apply rubbing alcohol to a clean cloth.

  Blot the ink stain with the cloth. Don't rub the stain as ink can spread and run quickly and can make the ink stain look worse.

  Blot the stain with nail polish remover if it is still visible.

  Press a cloth into the formerly stained area to soak up the rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover residue.

Protein Stains

  Mix 1 cup lukewarm water with 3 drops liquid dish soap. Do not use liquid dish soap that contains bleach. The liquid dish soap will remove protein stains such as food, blood or urine.

  Dab the soapy water on the protein stain spot with a clean cloth. Work until you remove all of the stain.

  Blot a cloth over the area to soak up the soapy residue.

New Red Wine Stains

  Shake a layer of salt on top of the wine if you have recently spilled it. This will keep it from soaking into the sofa.

  Pour a little white wine over the salt layer. This will remove the red color from the stain.

  Brush off the salt carefully to ensure that it doesn't spread the stain.

  Blot the area with a clean cloth until it is dry.
