Pick up the bottom of the seat area on the futon. Grab carefully, as some frames may have rough areas or sharp edges that can hurt your fingers.
Push the seat area up, so that it is upright and the back part of the futon tilts backward. The futon should temporarily look as though you set it up to face the wall.
Listen for a clicking noise as you push the seating area upright. This is the sound of the seating area disengaging from being locked into a right angle with the back.
Fold the seating area back down, where it was before. The back portion of the futon should remain down, so when you fold the seating area back down, it forms a bed.
Unfold the legs under the seating area, if your futon model has them. Some futon models do not have stabilizing legs here, as their design stabilizes them in other ways.
