How to Keep Pads on Furniture to Protect a Hardwood Floor

Hardwood floors are durable and easy to clean, but they are susceptible to scratches caused by sliding furniture. The most common means of protection is to use felt pads on the furniture legs, but many homeowners find they have a hard time keeping the pads in place. The key to the process is to properly prepare the furniture before installing the pads that will protect your hardwood floor.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the piece of furniture on its side or back so that the feet of the furniture are accessible.

    • 2

Buff the bottom of the first foot, using a fine grade sandpaper to remove any roughness from the bottom of the piece.

    • 3

Pour one teaspoon rubbing alcohol onto a folded paper towel.

    • 4

Rub the bottom of the furniture foot with the alcohol, using a brisk back-and-forth motion to remove all dust and residue from the bottom of the foot. Allow it to dry completely.

    • 5

Remove the protective paper from the adhesive back of one felt pad.

    • 6

Place the felt pad on the bottom of the furniture leg, positioning the pad so that it is centered on the foot.

    • 7

Press the felt pad firmly into place.

    • 8

Repeat the process with each remaining furniture leg before returning the furniture to its upright position.

    • 9

Check the pads once a month, brushing off any dust, dirt and grit to prevent the adhesive backing from loosing its gripping properties.
