How to Clean a Furniture Slipcover

Slipcovers provide a simple way to update your decor without investing a ton of money. Draped decoratively over the furniture, slipcovers can change the look and feel of the room in an instant. In addition, they can be used to cover delicate fabrics and protect them from the damage caused by children, pets or daily use. As an added bonus, slipcovers are simple to clean. While the precise laundering methods will vary somewhat from one slipcover to the next, there are a few general procedures that will keep your slipcovers looking fresh.

Instructions

    • 1

Run the vacuum over the slipcover while it is still wrapped around the furniture. This will remove most of the loose dirt and debris. Use the brush attachment and sweep the nozzle over the surface of the slipcover, paying particular attention to cracks, crevices and corners. Alternatively, the slipcover can be taken outside and given a brisk shake.

    • 2

Lay the slipcover out on a large, flat surface. Inspect the material carefully, making a note of any spots or stains.

    • 3

Combine 1 tsp. liquid dishwashing detergent and 2 cups of cold water. Stir the solution briskly with a fork, until bubbles begin to form.

    • 4

Dab any visible stains with a soft cloth that has been dampened in soap solution. Blot gently, moving gradually from the outside edges of the stain toward the middle. Sponge the spots with cold water to rinse the soap away.

    • 5

Squeeze ½ tsp. liquid dishwashing detergent onto any stubborn stains. Lightly rub the detergent into the affected area with a damp cloth. Rinse with cold water and repeat if necessary.

    • 6

Check the manufacturer's tag for specific washing instructions. If no directions are available, close any zippers or hook-and-loop style tags and place the slipcover in the washing machine. Choose the gentle setting, mild laundry detergent and cold water for both the wash cycle and the rinse.

    • 7

Remove the slipcover from the machine once the wash cycle is complete. Hang the freshly washed fabric on the line and let it dry naturally.
