How to Sew a Floor Cushion

If you like to entertain, but don't have a lot of seating in your house, sew a few floor cushions to seat guests during parties or get-togethers. If you are familiar with making throw pillows, you'll find that a floor pillow is simply a bigger version. Use foam instead of polyester batting for the filling so that the cushion provides adequate support. You may also want to use a heavy-duty fabric so the cushion doesn't wear down too quickly.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the fabric into two 31-inch squares, three 31-by-4 inch rectangles and two 31-by-2 1/2-inch rectangles, for a total of seven pieces.

    • 2

Place two of the 31-by-4 inch strips on top of each other, right sides together, and pin along one 4-inch side. Sew together with a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

    • 3

Pin the 4-inch side of the third 31-by-4 inch strip to the end of one of the sewn together strips, with the right sides facing together. Sew together along the end.

    • 4

Place the right sides of the two 31-by-2 1/2 inch strips together. Pin along one long side and baste, using the longest stitch on your machine, with a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

    • 5

Open the folded strip and press the seam flat. Place the zipper face down on top of the wrong side of the seam. Line up the top of the zipper 1/2 inch away from one edge. You'll have about 6 inches of extra zipper on the other side of the strip. Pin the zipper in place.

    • 6

Attach the zipper foot to your sewing machine. Sew the zipper to the fabric strip, stitching on both sides of the zipper tape. Turn the seam over and use your seam ripper to tear out the basting stitch and expose the front of the zipper. Close the zipper and cut any extra zipper material off the end of the fabric strip.

    • 7

Pin the short ends of the zippered fabric strip to the ends of the sewn together fabric strips, to make a square. Sew the ends together with a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

    • 8

Slide the sewn together strips over the sides of the foam to make sure they fit snugly over it. Adjust as needed, either by tearing out your stitches and sewing with a smaller seam allowance or sewing with a bigger seam allowance.

    • 9

Take the strips off of the foam and turn inside out. Slide back onto the sides of the foam. Place one of the 31-inch squares on top of the foam, right side facing down. Pin the sides of the square to the sides of the strips and take off of the foam. Sew the square to the strips on all four sides with a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

    • 10

Unzip the zipper. Pin the four sides of the other 31-inch square to the other four sides of the strips. Don't put the fabric on the foam this time, as it will be difficult to take it off to sew. Sew the bottom square to the strips with a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

    • 11

Turn the cushion cover right side out. Push the foam into the cover through the zipper opening. It will be a tight fit. Zip closed.
