Linseed Oil for Cleaning Wood Surfaces

When you are looking to clean wood using a natural method that will not harm the wood, use linseed oil. Boiled linseed oil gives wood a fresh natural shine that makes old furniture look new again.
  1. Equipment

    • To clean wooden furniture with linseed oil, you will need a gallon bucket, hot water, boiled linseed oil and gum turpentine. You will also need clean rags and rubber gloves to protect your hands.

    Method

    • In a plastic bucket, mix 1 gallon of hot water with 2 tbsp. of gum turpentine and 4 tbsp. of linseed oil. Put on a pair of rubber gloves and soak a clean rag in the mixture, wringing it out and using it to wash the wood surface. Then buff the wood dry with a clean rag.

    Alternatives

    • You can also dissolve grime on wood by lightly moistening a soft cloth with mineral spirits and using it to rub the wood. You may also use a solution that is 20 percent household ammonia and 80 percent water to clean old wood, though this can result in a discoloration or a clouding of the finish.
