Homemade Oil for a Butcher Block

Cleaning butcher blocks is an important step in killing germs in the kitchen, but water and soaps cause wooden surfaces to crack and dry out. Keep your butcher block at its best with regular oil treatments. Commercial products are available in most stores that sell kitchen supplies. However, you can make an inexpensive treatment at home. Mineral oil is effective, as it does not turn rancid over time.
