How to Clean Chintz Upholstery

Chintz is a cotton fabric that usually has a print. It is typically used for curtains and slip covers, as well as place mats and napkins. Chintz is glazed to give it a polished look, and therefore, it is not washable. Dry cleaning is recommended for all chintz fabrics because washing will remove the glazing. Wax and starch glaze washes out of chintz very easily, but resin glaze will withstand cleaning much better.

Test a spot cleaner for color fastness and staining on a rarely exposed area of the chintz before use. If there is no problem, spray the spot cleaner on a towel or brush, then rub the towel or brush on the stain until it is removed. Blot the area with a towel.

Test a dry-cleaning sheet for color fastness on a rarely exposed area of the chintz before use. If there is no problem, wipe the upholstery with the dry-cleaning sheet to remove dirt. If the upholstery is a removable slip cover, follow the instructions recommended by the dry-cleaning product for cleaning the item in a clothes dryer.
