Pinewoods Cleaning

Because pine grows quickly and is a sturdy solid wood, it is a good source of wood for furniture, cabinets, doors, floors and wood paneling. Take care when cleaning raw pinewood, as it is porous and will absorb cleaning agents and discolor. With a good finish, however, it will clean to a brilliant shine.
  1. Unfinished Pinewood

    • Wipe the wood down with a cloth dampened with vinegar to remove dust. Use a crumbly cleaner, which is a dry cleaner with the consistency of putty found at a hardware store, to clean stains off pinewood. If any stains still are present, sand the pinewood with 180-grit sandpaper. Vacuum the dust from the sanding and use a tack cloth on the wood to remove any small particles of dust.

    Finished Pinewood Cabinets

    • Dust the cabinets with a cloth to remove any loose dust. There are products that are used for cleaning grease and dirt buildup off the kitchen cabinets. If you want to be environmentally friendly, use 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1 cupful of dish washing soap to 1 gallon of warm water. Apply this mixture with a soft bristle scrub brush. Rinse with clear water. If the cabinet still feels sticky, use straight dry baking soda as a scrubbing agent. Apply furniture polish after a cleaning for a shine.

    Pinewood Floors

    • Vacuum pinewood floors frequently, as grit and dust can cause scratches on pinewood floors. For a light cleaning, damp mop the floors. Do not allow water to stand on floors; remove any excess water with soft towel. For extra dirty floors, use a soap specially formulated for wood floors. Follow the directions on the label. The soap can be purchased anywhere cleaning supplies are sold. Waxed floors may have to be re-waxed after a deep cleaning.

    Pinewood Furniture

    • Dust daily with a feather duster and once a week go over the furniture with a damp cloth. Remove everything from the surface and dust underneath the edges. Do not use detergents on the furniture because the soap may damage the surface of the wood. Use a damp cloth water to remove dirt, cleaning one area at a time. Wipe the area dry with soft cloth to avoid standing water and scratching the surface. After cleaning, apply a furniture polish that is silicon free to bring out the shine.
