Care of Canopy Beds

Canopy beds may seem like an extravagant luxury, but they require almost the same care as any other furniture. The main difference, of course, is caring for the canopy drapes. Vacuum draperies frequently and wash them at least twice a year to remove built-up dirt and odors. To minimize maintenance costs, choose draperies that are machine washable and wrinkle-resistant.

Instructions

    • 1

Dust the metal or wood surfaces of the canopy bed weekly to remove dust and grime. Use lemon oil to dust a wood bed or dampen a cloth slightly with water to clean a metal bed. Don't forget the canopy frames. Dust collects there even though you can't see it.

    • 2

Vacuum the canopy draperies with the upholstery brush attachment of your vacuum at least every two weeks to remove dust, which can irritate allergies and asthma. Use care if your canopy is a light, fragile fabric such as netting. Wash the canopy draperies at least every six months if they're machine-washable; otherwise dry-clean them.

    • 3

Check the frame occasionally and tighten any screws that may have come loose. The last thing you want is to have the draperies and frame come down on your head in the middle of the night.

Vacuum the mattress with the upholstery brush attachment every few weeks to remove dust. Flip the mattress so it wears evenly.
