How to Care for a Latex Core Mattress

Latex core mattresses, hypoallergenic and environmentally friendly, are made from renewable sources, and covers protect the mattress from dust mites and other allergens. Latex mattresses are durable and require less frequent flipping or turning than traditional box spring mattresses. Periodically cleaning the mattress cover along with routine moisture checks will keep the latex core mattress in excellent condition.

Instructions

    • 1

Have a helper assist you in installing the latex mattress over the wooden slats of the bed frame. Lift the mattress off the slats before centering it over the frame. This will prevent splinters or tears in the cover or latex core. Only install the mattress on slat frames because other flat frames do not provide adequate ventilation and may cause mold growth.

    • 2

Roll the latex mattress whenever you need to move it off the slats, such as when you are turning or flipping the mattress. Rolling makes it easier to move and prevents tearing. Flip the mattress vertically and horizontally once every six months.

    • 3

Lift the mattress once every two months and feel for moisture between the mattress and the bed slats. Moisture can present a mold problem, so wipe down any wetness with a dry towel.

    • 4

Unzip the latex mattress cover once a year and wash it in cool water with a gentle detergent. Hang the mattress cover to air dry in the sun. If your mattress cover is wool, you can skip the washing and just leave it in direct sunlight for eight hours. The curing will deodorize the cover.

Spot-clean any stains by blotting them with a clean cloth dampened with gentle detergent. Rinse the cloth with clean water and re-blot the stain to rinse it. Let it air dry.
