How to Repair Feather Pillows

Feather pillows, though often confused with down pillows, have a distinct set of features. They are stuffed with a ducks or geese's feathers, which are large, have quills and often cause clumping inside the pillow. Feather pillows can become misshapen or lumpy when handled carelessly or washed incorrectly. If you do not take steps to remedy the situation, feather pillows can eventually lose their softness. In most cases, you can restore feather pillows to their original condition.

Remove all covers from the pillow and place it in your washing machine. Check the pillow manufacturer's label for specific washing instructions. The label will have specific instructions for the amount of detergent to add to the washing machine. Add this amount and run the washing machine.

Run the pillow through a second rinse cycle in your washing machine. The water temperature does not matter in washing your down pillow.

Place the pillow in your dryer, and set the dryer to maximum heat. Start the dryer, and check the pillow every 10 to 15 minutes. Shake and squeeze the pillow so the feather stuffing sits evenly inside the pillow during the drying process.
